Is AI Making Us Lazy?

I caught myself thinking about this the other day after using AI for something that would normally have taken me quite a bit longer.

The task itself wasn’t difficult. It just required sitting down, organizing my thoughts, searching for information, making a few decisions, and putting everything together.

Instead, I asked AI for help.

A few seconds later, I had a starting point.

It was useful. It saved me time. And honestly, it felt great.

But then I had an uncomfortable thought:

If I keep doing this, am I becoming more productive — or am I simply getting out of the habit of thinking?

I don’t think the answer is as straightforward as either “AI is making us lazy” or “AI is making us smarter.”

The reality is probably somewhere in between.

And the more we use these tools, the more important that distinction becomes.

AI Is Extremely Good at Making Things Easier

This is probably the first thing we should admit.

AI makes an enormous number of everyday tasks easier.

It can take a complicated explanation and make it understandable. It can organize scattered ideas, summarize information, help with writing, suggest alternatives, analyze data, and give you a place to start when you have absolutely no idea where to start.

There is nothing inherently wrong with that.

We’ve always used technology to reduce unnecessary effort.

We don’t calculate every number by hand anymore. We don’t memorize every phone number. We don’t need a paper map in the glove compartment.

Technology has always taken certain tasks off our hands.

The difference with generative AI is that it is moving into an area that feels much more personal: the work of thinking itself.

And that’s where I think things get complicated.

Saving Time Isn’t the Same as Avoiding Thought

There’s a difference between using AI to save time and using it because you don’t want to think.

Those two things can look almost identical from the outside.

Imagine that you have to write an important email.

You could write the whole thing yourself and spend 20 minutes wondering whether your words sound right.

Or you could ask AI to help you make the message clearer and then edit it until it sounds like you.

I don’t see that as laziness.

You’re still making the decisions. You’re still deciding what you mean, what you want to say, and whether the final version is actually right.

Now imagine a different situation.

You type two sentences into a chatbot and ask it to write the entire email. You don’t really read the response. You don’t question the wording. You simply copy, paste, and send.

Same technology.

Very different behavior.

That distinction matters because research is beginning to show that the way people use AI can influence how much mental effort they put into a task.

A 2025 study from Microsoft Research and Carnegie Mellon University surveyed 319 knowledge workers and collected 936 real-world examples of AI use. The researchers found that greater confidence in AI was associated with less reported critical-thinking effort, while people with greater confidence in their own abilities tended to engage more critically.

That’s interesting.

Not because it proves that AI makes people lazy.

It doesn’t.

But because it suggests that trusting the machine too much may make it easier to stop questioning the machine.

And That’s Where I Think the Real Risk Is

I’m not particularly worried that AI will make us incapable of writing an email.

I’m more interested in what happens when we stop asking ourselves why we believe something.

What happens when we stop checking?

When we stop comparing?

When we stop struggling with a difficult problem because we know an answer is only one prompt away?

Those small moments of effort may not feel important.

But they are often where learning happens.

Anyone who has ever learned something difficult knows that there is usually a period when you don’t understand it yet.

You try.

You get it wrong.

You try again.

You look at the problem from another angle.

Eventually, something clicks.

AI can shorten that process dramatically.

Sometimes that’s wonderful.

Sometimes it may mean we’re skipping the process entirely.

We Shouldn’t Forget That AI Can Also Make People Better at Their Jobs

This is where the conversation becomes much more interesting.

If we only talk about the risks, we’re missing half the story.

A well-known study published in the Quarterly Journal of Economics looked at more than 5,000 customer-support workers using a generative AI assistant. The researchers found that access to the AI increased productivity by about 15% on average. The gains were particularly large among less-experienced workers, and the study also found evidence that AI could help workers learn from the practices of more experienced colleagues.

That’s not a story about people becoming lazy.

It’s a story about technology helping people do things better.

And I think this is an important reminder.

Sometimes doing less manual work really is the point.

If AI can take care of repetitive tasks, maybe we should let it.

The problem isn’t that we’re doing less.

The problem is what we’re choosing not to do anymore.

There Is a Difference Between a Shortcut and a Substitute

I think about this distinction a lot.

A shortcut gets you somewhere faster.

A substitute takes your place.

If I use AI to help me brainstorm ideas, that’s a shortcut.

If I use it to challenge my argument, that’s a shortcut.

If I ask it to explain something I don’t understand and then go read the original sources, that’s a shortcut.

But if I stop forming my own opinion because I can simply ask AI what the answer is, that’s something else.

At that point, I’m no longer using a tool to support my thinking.

I’m asking the tool to do the thinking for me.

And that’s a habit worth watching.

The Most Dangerous Part May Be How Convenient It Feels

There is a reason people become attached to convenient technology.

Once you’ve experienced how much easier something can be, doing it the old-fashioned way suddenly feels ridiculous.

Why spend an hour researching something when AI can give you a summary in seconds?

Why struggle with the first paragraph when AI can write one?

Why organize your thoughts when a chatbot can create an outline?

Why sit with a difficult question when you can have an answer immediately?

I understand the temptation.

I use these tools too.

But there is something worth remembering: not every difficult thing is a problem that needs to be eliminated.

Sometimes the difficulty is part of the process.

Sometimes the thinking is the point.

What Happens to Skills We Stop Practicing?

This is the question I find more interesting than whether AI makes people “lazy.”

Think about any skill.

If you practice it regularly, you generally become more comfortable with it.

If you never use it, you shouldn’t be surprised when it becomes harder.

That’s not uniquely human, and it isn’t uniquely about AI.

But AI is different because it can potentially take over some of the very activities we use to develop intellectual skills: writing, analyzing, comparing, summarizing, reasoning, and solving problems.

A 2025 experimental study involving argumentative writing reported lower cognitive-engagement scores among participants using ChatGPT than among participants in a non-AI control condition. The authors interpreted the findings as consistent with cognitive offloading, while also calling for more research and better ways of integrating AI without sacrificing active engagement.

That’s worth paying attention to.

But it’s also important not to exaggerate what the study tells us.

It doesn’t prove that using ChatGPT will permanently reduce someone’s intelligence.

It doesn’t prove that AI is damaging everyone’s brain.

It is one piece of a rapidly developing body of research.

And that’s exactly how we should treat it.

Maybe We Need to Change the Way We Use AI

I don’t think the answer is to stop using AI.

For most people, that’s neither realistic nor necessary.

Instead, maybe we need to become more deliberate about what we hand over to it.

There are tasks I would happily delegate.

There are others where I want to keep my own brain involved.

If I’m trying to understand an unfamiliar subject, I don’t want only an answer. I want context.

If I’m making an important decision, I want to know the reasoning behind the options.

If I’m writing something personal, I want the words to sound like me.

And if I’m forming an opinion about something that matters, I don’t want a chatbot deciding what I believe.

That’s where I draw the line.

Maybe We Should Ask AI Better Questions

There’s another way to look at this.

Instead of constantly asking:

“What’s the answer?”

we could ask:

“What am I missing?”

Instead of:

“Write this for me.”

try:

“Help me make this better without changing my voice.”

Instead of:

“Tell me which option is best.”

try:

“What are the strongest arguments for and against each option?”

Those are very different conversations.

The first approach encourages dependence.

The second keeps you involved.

AI doesn’t have to be the person in the room who always has the final word.

It can be the person who asks you a better question.

So, Is AI Making Us Lazy?

Maybe.

But I don’t think “lazy” is the most useful word.

I think dependent is more interesting.

Because a person can use AI every day and still be an excellent thinker.

They can use it to eliminate repetitive work, explore ideas, learn faster, challenge assumptions, and spend more time on things that actually require human judgment.

Another person can use the same technology to avoid every uncomfortable moment of thinking.

Neither person is necessarily more intelligent than the other.

They’re simply using the tool differently.

And that may be the part we need to pay attention to.

AI isn’t going to disappear.

It’s going to become faster, more capable, and more deeply embedded in everyday life.

So perhaps the real skill we need isn’t learning how to live without AI.

It’s learning when we should use it — and when we should put it down and think for ourselves.

Because convenience is wonderful.

Saving time is wonderful.

Getting help is wonderful.

But there are some things we shouldn’t outsource simply because we can.

And thinking might be one of them.
